Etel Adnan est née en 1925 à Beyrouth.
Elle a fait des études de lettres, puis de philosophie à Beyrouth, Paris et aux États-Unis.
De 1958 à 1972 elle enseigne la philosophie au Dominican College de San Rafael, en Californie. En 1972, de retour au Liban elle dirige les pages culturelles du journal Al Safa, puis de L’Orient le jour. En 1977 elle s’établit de nouveau en Californie et vit désormais entre Sausalito et Paris.
D’abord peintre et artiste visuelle, elle publie en 1965 ses premiers poèmes contre la guerre du Vietnam et devient, selon ses propres termes, « une poétesse américaine ». En 1977, son roman Sitt Marie-Rose est publié à Paris et gagne le prix France-Pays Arabe.
Elle a participé au Marathon 2010 de la Serpentine Gallery, et a été l’une des artistes invitées de la Documenta 13 de Kassel en juin 2012.
